Parrots love to chew wooden platforms. Chewing is a parrot’s natural and instinctive behavior that is also associated with foraging and nest building. If your parrot is chewing your furniture, it’s their natural way of keeping their beak fit and polished. While some parrots often try to communicate through biting.

So you have to cross-check the situation and environment to determine which factors make them do so. Your bird can behave improperly if you don’t fulfill its desire. And we can see chewing as a common behavior in them.

Why Does Your Parrot Chew Furniture?

As I mentioned, parrots love to chew and they are cavity dwellers. In the wild, they prepare their nest by collecting branches and twigs from trees. Sometimes they need to excavate a hole into a tree or renovate the existing hole. They do this process by chewing and drilling with the sharpness of their beak. Chewing is the thing that parrots do the best.

We have to consider this as a healthy occupation that serves the purpose of keeping them mentally and physically fit. Unfortunately, parrots in captivity do not get the opportunity to go outside and chew trees. So, they use whatever they have near them. Like your expensive furniture that is made of wood. Chewing gives a lot of stimulation and physical activities, but it is your responsibility to control them at an excessive level. 

For my parrots, I have tried a lot of tricks to distract them from chewing furniture and engage them with other satisfying activities. Whenever I put my parrot in a cage, I always remember to fill it with wooden toys, ropes, hard shell nuts, and tree branches to satisfy their chewing desire. As a result, when they are inside my home, they do not tend to chew other materials. 

It is challenging to keep your parrot entertained because they need continuous stimulation and interaction. If you are not providing them with destructible toys, the parrots will find chewable items within your home like expensive furniture, doors, molding, and baseboards, which can create more problems in the future.  

What can you do to stop them from chewing your furniture?

If you are dealing with a parrot that is chewing on your furniture, there are several steps you can take to discourage this behavior:

🟢Find out the reason why they are biting

As we said before, chewing is the natural behavior of parrots. But, sometimes they chew wooden furniture more, which is uncommon. If your parrot is startled, stressed, or scared, they tend to chew something around them. This is the method of their reaction. Things may vary from parrot to parrot. So observe your bird to find any unusual behavior in them. 

🟢Groom your bird 

Your parrots need grooming at a young age. As a responsible parrot parent, you should groom them to build good habits in them. Treat your parrot like a kid providing them with love and care so that it will obey you. Parrots need a lot of attention and grooming to learn new things and improve their behavior. 

🟢Provide them with chewing toys

Parrots like to chew things. If your parrot is chewing your furniture, distract them with chewable toys. You can do this better by giving them wooden toys. It can help to fulfill your parrot’s desire to chew something. I often provide my parrots to chew on for exercise and enrichment, and to keep their beaks well-coped and clean. You can afford wooden toys as it is very easily available in the market and low in cost.

If your parrot is stressed it will show unusual behavior. So, avoid things that make them stressed. If your parrot is afraid of crowds, try to keep them calm by shifting their cage to a vacant place. The first thing you have to do is identify the reason why they are stressed.

🟢Stay positive and cheerful

Your attitude matters. If you behave aggressively with your parrot, it will react accordingly. Try to be happy and cheerful when you are around your parrot. One of the major reasons why parrots bite is when they feel negative vibes. Thus, you should make them happy by providing what they like. 

🟢Spend quality time with your parrot. 

This is the most important thing you have to do with your beloved parrots. From your busy schedule of life, spare some time to interact with your parrot. This can make a significant difference in them physically and emotionally. Try to play with them and comfort them by providing what they like.

🟢Decrease the boredom

As we know, parrots are active and intelligent and cannot sit all the time in the cage doing nothing. If your parrot doesn’t have the opportunity to play with toys, get out of the cage, or exercise, it can become bored in the cage. so, they might resort to mischief, screaming, biting, or self-mutilation. Try to engage your bird with different activities.

Well, there are many benefits of chewing as it provides required physical activities, alleviates boredom, maintains emotional health, and makes them happy.
